We are delighted to share that Rt. Rev. Dr. Jude N. Silva, Bishop of Badulla, participated in, joined, and celebrated the Holy Eucharistic Mass with the bishops of the German Bishops’ Conference during their Spring Plenary Assembly at the Basilica of Steinfeld, Germany.

Bishop Jude N. Silva, the Bishop of Badulla, recently addressed the German Bishops’ Conference, bringing attention to the struggles faced by Sri Lanka’s estate plantation workers. His address was part of Germany’s Lenten Campaign, which focuses on social justice and solidarity with marginalized communities.

The youth of Madusima St. Paul the Hermit Parish participated in a transformative Leadership Workshop on February 21st and 22nd. Organized by their Youth Association and guided by Rev. Fr. Mariyadas IVD, the Parish Priest, the event, a significant part of their annual plan, was made possible by all of their efforts.

In a gesture of interfaith harmony, Rev. Fr. Bernard Costa, Director of Ecumenism And Inter-religious Dialogue of the Diocese of Badulla, visited Bathgoda Hindu Kovil on February 26, 2025 as preparations for the Shiva Ratri observance were underway at the Kovil.

On Wednesday, February 26, 2025, the Diocese of Badulla joined the universal Church in a special prayer for the Holy Father’s speedy recovery. Holy Eucharist and Rosary were offered in all parishes, bringing the faithful together in unity and devotion.

At the invitation of Rt. Rev. Dr. Jude N. Silva, Bishop of Badulla, all priests and religious serving in the Diocese of Badulla convened at the Bishop’s House for a special meeting on February 24, dedicated to reflecting on the mission of the Catholic Church within the diocese.

The annual feast of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Kataragama, a part of the Buttala Parish, commenced on February 21, 2025, with the hoisting of the flagstaff. The following evening, February 22nd, the Solemn Vespers Service was held, attended by priests, religious members, and numerous devotees, with Rev. Bro. Ivan leading the service. On February 23rd, the Festive Holy Eucharist was officiated by Rev. Fr. Ravi John, Assistant Priest of Haputhale Parish.

The annual feast of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Kataragama, part of the Buttala Parish, commenced today, February 21, 2025, with the hoisting of the flagstaff. The ceremony was led by Rev. Fr. Dilex Shantha, Parish Priest of St. Mary's Cathedral, Badulla, who blessed and hoisted the flag. Rev. Fr. Rajeewan, the Parish Priest of Buttala, was also in attendance. Following the flag hoisting, Fr. Dilex celebrated the Novena Holy Mass.

The annual feast of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Lunugala was celebrated on February 16, 2025. Carmelite priests from India celebrated the Festive Holy Eucharist, which was attended by His Lordship Rt. Rev. Dr. Jude N. Silva, Bishop of Badulla. A procession with the statue of Our Lady of Lourdes followed the mass, concluding with the Bishop's blessing. Parishioners and devotees from surrounding areas attended the event.

The Our Lady of Mahaveli Shrine Parish in Lathapandura, Dehiyathakandiya celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes in the grotto located in church premises. Rev. Fr. Roshantha Fernando, Administrator of the Shrine celebrated the Holy Eucharist. This special mass was also part of the Diocesan Sick Day observances held in all parishes on February 11, 2025, offering prayers for the sick and suffering.

The Catholic Church celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes on February 11th. The Welimada Parish community along with their Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Gabriel, held a celebration at a grotto in Saappukada to ask for the intercession of Our Lady.

Very Rev. Fr. Mervyn Sudarshan, celebrating 25 years of priesthood, offered a special thanksgiving Mass on February 9, 2025, at his home parish, Our Lady of Velankanni, Nayabedda. This was a deeply personal celebration, as the parish became his spiritual home after its establishment in 1990. Prior to that, this teritory belonged to Bandarawela Parish. The Eucharistic celebration was a moment of gratitude for the gift of priesthood and God’s guidance throughout his ministry.

A distinguished delegation from Misereor, led by His Grace Stephan Burger, Archbishop of Freiburg and Metropolitan Bishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Freiburg, along with His Lordship Ludger Schepers, Auxiliary Bishop of Essen, visited the Diocese of Badulla last week.

In a beautiful act of unity and compassion, the parishioners of St. Sebastian’s Church, Haldummulla, came together to offer an almsgiving at Kalupahanawatta Sri Isipathana Retreat Ashram on the auspicious Poya Day.

In preparation for the Jubilee Year 2025, the Diocese of Badulla united in faith to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes across various parishes. This special occasion, observed with great devotion, highlighted the significance of February 11th as the World Day of the Sick.
