As an integral part of Jubilee 2025, the sixth Holy Door in the Diocese of Badulla was solemnly opened on January 12, 2025, at St. Joseph Vaz Church, Namunukula Parish, Ballaketuwa. The ceremony was presided over by Very Rev. Fr. Mervyn Sudarshan, Episcopal Vicar.
Although there are many churches and shrines dedicated to St. Joseph Vaz, the Apostle of Sri Lanka, the Church in Namunukula, Ballaketuwa, holds special significance. It is recognized as the only Parish Church in Sri Lanka dedicated to St. Joseph Vaz, and the only Church in the Diocese of Badulla bearing his name. This Church was designated as the Jubilee Pilgrim Church by the Bishop Jude N. Silva, as it marks the 10th anniversary of the canonization of St. Joseph Vaz this year.
St. Joseph Vaz is a powerful missionary who brought light to the Sri Lankan Catholic Church. His life and legacy inspire us to seek the Lord with hearts full of hope and to reflect deeply on repentance and renewal during this Jubilee Year.
The St. Joseph Vaz Parish Community also began their annual feast today with the hoisting of the flagstaff, adding an extra sense of celebration to this special occasion. This sacred time invites pilgrims to visit the Holy Door to seek the Lord's blessings and to offer prayers through the intercession of St. Joseph Vaz.
